A CBT Model of HEALTH ANXIETY (Hypochondriasis)
Health anxiety (hypochondriasis, illness anxiety disorder) can feel like it comes out of nowhere—but there’s a clear psychological process behind it. This process often begins with a physical sensation or health-related trigger, like a sore throat, a new mole, or hearing about someone else's illness. For many people, these moments pass. But for someone with health anxiety, these triggers activate deeply held beliefs and assumptions about health, illness, and danger—beliefs shaped by past experiences, trauma, or family dynamics. Once those beliefs are activated, the body responds with anxiety, which brings on more physical symptoms—dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, tension—which then get interpreted as further evidence that something is seriously wrong. To relieve the distress, people often focus on their symptoms, check their bodies, seek reassurance from doctors or the internet, or avoid situations that make them feel more anxious. The problem is, all of these strategies provide only short-term relief. In the long run, they reinforce the anxiety and create a vicious cycle: more checking, more anxiety, more symptoms. This cycle can make daily life feel like a constant battle for certainty and safety. Understanding the cognitive-behavioral model of health anxiety is the first step toward breaking the cycle. When you recognize what fuels your worry—and how your behaviors unknowingly keep it going—you gain the insight needed to start making real, lasting change.
