~ Bushido: The Quiet Path

Kaito, the youngest of four, was born to Clan Ishiro. As a boy, he once lowered his bow at a small bird, unwilling to take its life. His eldest brother scoffed, “You’ll spare the wrong one someday.” Years later, Kaito tried to earn their trust by tracking a feared bandit. But the Bandit wept—spoke of hunger, of sons, of shame. Kaito let him go, and for his deeds, was left beaten in the dirt. Kaito's clan found him and, disgusted, sold him to a northern warlord to erase the disgrace. There, in enemy colors, Kaito hauled water, studied maps, and learned the quiet weight of command. He rose—first as advisor, then as general—not by ambition, but by restraint. When offered blood, he gave counsel; when handed war, he asked who deserved it.

Many years had passed. When word came of enemy raiders burning through the southern valleys, Kaito led the counterstrike—measured, exact. At the gates of a broken outpost, Kaito found his brothers kneeling in chains. The warlord asked for their heads. Kaito unsheathed no blade. “Spare them,” he said. “One day, they may see clearly.” His eldest brother bowed low—not in defiance, but in shame and recognition. Rising with tears in his eyes, he whispered, “You’ve spared the wrong ones again.”
