Operated by RegionAlps, the line is fully integrated into Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) with hourly Regio services run under timetables R91.

The service begins at Saint‑Gingolph station, situated precisely on the French–Swiss border—though rail traffic proceeds only on the Swiss side following the discontinuation of French services in 1972. The line was originally opened in 1859 and later extended to Saint‑Maurice in 1886 by the historic Compagnie de la Ligne d’Italie.

Departing Saint‑Gingolph, the track hugs the eastern shore of Lake Geneva, passing through French-speaking villages such as Bouveret and Monthey, before turning inland at Saint‑Maurice and entering the rugged upper Valais region. As the train descends the Rhone Valley, it passes major stations including Martigny, Sion, and Visp, before arriving in Brig, a mountainous junction town connecting to the Lötschberg and Simplon routes.

The journey is offering a rich tapestry of natural scenery—from placid lakeside towns to steep vineyard terraces and glacier-fed mountain vistas.
