This concept can also be used for outdoor fireplaces, not just your indoor fireplace. If you have a propane setup instead of natural gas, as shown here, be sure to use vermiculite as a base and fully cover your burner. Propane is heavier than gas and will sink. The vermiculite breathes better and won't clog the burners.
