How to Create a Patio Pond - A Water Feature for Smaller Yards
Tools needed:
- Drill
- Knife
Materials needed:
- Large Waterproof Container (if container is clay, you will need several cans of “clay pot sealant.”)
- Submersible Water-Garden Pump
- Large Nursery(plastic) Pot
- Large Flat Rocks
- Underwater, Oxygenating Plants
- Floating, surface plants
- Bog plants
- Goldfish
- 5” x 5” Piece of Roofing Rubber
- Tube of Silicone Sealant
Steps for building a Patio Pond
1) Prepare your pond. If you are using a large clay pot, you will need to “waterproof” it. It may take several cans of clay pot sealant to seal the inside and outside of the pot. Next, attach the piece of roofing rubber over the hole using the silicone sealant. Be sure not to glue down the edges of the rubber- the edges can be used to pull the rubber loose (for draining the pond).
2) Create your shelf. The plastic nursery pot can be turned upside-down in the pond. This will create a shelf for your bog plants. Cutting a section from the plastic pot will allow a water lily to rest beneath it. You may want to use some flat rocks, to raise the top of the shelf to the proper level (for bog plants).
3) Install the pump. Next, drill a hole in the top of the plastic pot for your waterpump hose. The diameter will depend on the diameter of your hose. Insert the hose and connect it to your pump.
4) Fill your pond with water. If you are placing a water lily beneath the shelf, be sure to place it before you begin filling your pond.
5) Add your plants. Remember, that the bog plant soil must remain partially above the water.
6) Add your fish. Fish are usually sold in plastic bags- place the entire bag in the water for about 20 minutes. This will allow the temperature of the water inside the bag, to adjust to the water temperature in the pond.
7) Turn on your pump and adjust the water to the proper level. Excessive splashing is not a good idea.
