How to Perform Hold-Relax PNF Stretching | Hamstring Flexibility
In this video, Dr. Donald Ozello demonstrates the Hold-Relax (HR) technique of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching. This foundational flexibility method utilizes Autogenic Inhibition to relax the target muscle and increase range of motion.
📋 Clinical Context: Hold-Relax vs. Static Stretching The Hold-Relax technique is designed to overcome the stretch reflex. By contracting the tight muscle isometrically before stretching it, you fatigue the motor units and trigger the Golgi Tendon Organs (GTOs) to relax the muscle.
Mechanism: Autogenic Inhibition (relaxing the muscle after high tension).
Best For: Patients who cannot tolerate the active contraction required in HRAC, or for acute muscle spasms.
Technique Breakdown:
Patient Position: Supine, leg passively raised to the point of mild resistance.
Step 1 (Isometric): Patient inhales and contracts the hamstrings (pushing down) against the doctor's resistance (75-90% effort) for 10 seconds.
Step 2 (Relax): Patient exhales and completely relaxes the leg.
Step 3 (Stretch): The doctor passively moves the leg into a deeper range of flexion.
Duration: Hold the new stretch for 15-60 seconds. Repeat 3-4 times.
