Hi, I'm Leroy. Today I'm going to teach you how to start a fire in a fireplace.
To start a fire, all you need is tinder, kindling, firewood and a single match.
Step one is tender and kindling. With the tender you want it to be very dry, start extremely easy and leave very little ash behind. A lot of people like to use newspaper, it's actually not a great idea, because it can be dangerous, because it can float away, and it leaves a lot of ash. With the tender you're going to put it below the grate and then you're going to put 3-4 pieces of kindling. Kindling you want it to be small pieces of wood that are very dry. Also easy to start. You're going to light a single match, put it under the tinder and then you use that to start the kindling.
Now let's talk firewood. When you're starting a fire you don't want to use a very large or huge log, you want to use a medium size log on the front to make the fire lean back a little bit for safety. On the back you want to use a small log and then the top two or three logs that you put on, you want those to be small as well. You want as much air to log ratio as possible. The larger the log the harder it is going to be to catch on fire, the smaller the log, the easier it is.
Now that you got your fire started, if you want a larger fire; you build it up and you create more stories with your log cabin, and you're going to want the logs pretty close, but not touching, so they transfer the heat together, but you don't want them so close so that theres not enough oxygen for the fire to burn hot.
