How To Start A Pilot Light on a Gas Fireplace
How to Light a Pilot Light on a Gas Fireplace
Welcome to Midtown Chimney Sweeps! In today’s video, Byron demonstrates how to light a pilot light on a gas fireplace—a common issue during the winter and spring when wind and cold drafts can extinguish the tiny flame. Follow along as we explain step-by-step how to reignite your fireplace safely and efficiently.
Why Do Pilot Lights Go Out?
Pilot lights can blow out frequently due to cold drafts coming down the flue, wind, or wear and tear on the thermopile. If your pilot light has gone out, don’t worry—it’s often an easy fix.
Safety First!
Before lighting your pilot light, follow these safety tips:
- Open the Damper: Ensure the damper is fully open to allow proper ventilation.
- Annual Inspections* Per the NFPA 211 guidelines and common sense, every chimney and fireplace should be inspected annually. If you haven’t had yours inspected recently, call a licensed, certified, and insured professional before relighting the pilot light.
Steps to Light Your Pilot Light (Manual Igniter)
If your fireplace is in good condition and the pilot light is out, grab some matches or a small jet flame igniter and follow these steps:
1. Locate the pilot light area near the base of the fireplace.
2. Use the matches or igniter to light the flame.
3. Once the flame is lit, turn the "On/Off/Pilot Knob" from the “Pilot” position to the “On” position. This will enable the wall switch to activate the main burner.
For Electronic Igniters:
If your fireplace has an electronic igniter, this video is not for you—please watch our dedicated video on electronic ignition systems. If the unit isn’t lighting, the issue may be dead batteries in the electronic valve. This video might help on the electronic version:
Wall Switch and Pilot Light Control
Gas fireplaces often have a wall switch located on the left or right side. Once the pilot light is lit and the knob is turned to “On,” the wall switch will activate the main burner.
Consider Upgrading to a Direct Vent Gas Insert
While traditional gas fireplaces are functional, they’re not our preferred recommendation. We suggest upgrading to a **direct vent gas insert** with a liner system. This setup seals off the flue, preventing cold drafts and making your home safer, more efficient, and warmer.
Keep Burning and Stay Warm
Enjoy your fireplace this season! Remember, proper maintenance and upgrades can make your fireplace experience even better.
