Ikea bowl paludarium with waterfall
Ikea bowl paludarium with waterfall
I had picked up a ceramic bowl from Ikea a couple of weeks back with a specific project in mind. A paludarium with a working waterfall.
Took me a while a source all the materials and here is the finalised build in this video.
I used a foam sheet (sun board) to create a base for the driftwood and submersible pump. There are two pieces of bog wood used here joined together with hardscape glue. The pump was placed below it on the board and tied with cable tie. the wood was also fixed to the board with silicone glue. I inserted the outflow pipe of the pump into one of the holes on the wood. I placed the hardscape in the bowl and ran a water test. It worked pretty ok. I used a piece of wood to adjust the flow of the water. I proceeded to further scape the wood with thin pieces of detailing roots.
Next I installed a hydroponic wick cord from the top of the wood to the bottom reservoir. This will help to keep the moss on the top hydrated.
I used dry Sphagnum moss soaked in water to fill in some of the cracks and crevices along the flow of water. I placed live moss over it. Next I added an Anubias, Bolbitis wrapped in geo textile fabric and a Ficus pumila to the scape. Then I started the pump and adjusted the flow with the wooden piece. i covered the same with a patch of java moss. I proceeded to add some Hydrocotyle tripartita and floaters (Dwarf water lettuce and Salvinia) to give it the final look. It all came together very well. I placed it under a dedicated light stand and proceeded to take some more photos and videos of the setup.
