The village of Jaun en Gruyère is a true paradise for nature lovers!

At the bottom of the Jogne Valley awaits you the village of Jaun. Renowned for its waterfall and its unusual cemetery, it is mainly home to the Gastlosen, a majestic and unique mountain range in Switzerland. The only German-speaking town in La Gruyère, Jaun (Bellegarde) and Im Fang (La Villette) invite you to discover their typically Swiss chalets and their unspoiled nature.

Jaun is a locality and a Swiss municipality in the canton of Fribourg, located in the district of Gruyère.Jaun is the only German-speaking municipality in the district of Gruyère, although it borders the district of Sense, which is entirely German-speaking.

Jaun is mentioned for the first time in 1228, under the French name of Balavarda. In 1397, it is mentioned under the German name Youn. Since the town was populated mainly since the Reformation from the Simmental valley by Bernese inhabitants attached to the Catholic religion, the language of the town is German. Until 1870, when the new road linking Bellegarde from Broc was built, Bellegarde was economically more oriented towards Simmental than towards Gruyère.

Kandersteg is located in the Bernese Oberland, at an altitude of 1200 m, and offers a magnificent view of the Blüemlisalp massif. This quiet holiday resort of around 1000 inhabitants has retained its village character thanks to its many wooden chalets. In summer, it is a real paradise for hikers. In winter, Nordic skiing takes center stage.

What characterizes Kandersteg is the great diversity in terms of accommodation: from the 4-star superior hotel to holiday apartments, via the camping ground to the international scout center which can accommodate groups, it you are spoiled for choice. Numerous mountain inns and huts of the Swiss Alpine Club in the Lötschberg holiday region make it possible to organize multi-day mountain hikes. The village is also known for its good restaurants since it has three restaurants listed in gastronomic guides.

With its many attractive mountain, walking and walking trails, Kandersteg is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers. The best known routes lead over the Gemmi pass directly to Loèche-les-Bains in the Valais, to Lake Oeschinen or through the wild and romantic Gastern valley, to continue towards the Lötschental via the Lötschen pass (the most important from a historical point of view) at an altitude of 2690 m.

Lake Oeschinen – accessible from Kandersteg by gondola or a wide, family-friendly hiking trail – not only offers the idyllic setting of a deep blue mountain lake, but also a great piste of summer tobogganing. The Allmenalp via ferrata, undoubtedly one of the most spectacular in the Alps, is a real sporting challenge.

Kandersteg is a cross-country skiing paradise, always sufficiently snow-covered in winter. More than 50 kilometers of marked trails (classic cross-country skiing and skating) are available in the valley and on the sunny terraces. Alpine ski enthusiasts will also find what they are looking for at Lake Oeschinen and Sunnbüel. The ski areas mainly attract beginners, "relaxed" skiers and families.
