Relaxing Ancient Greek Music Vol. II
Music by Farya Faraji. This is not only a follow up to the 30 minute of music I uploaded two years ago, this one being entirely historically informed compared to the previous one which took some liberties for entertainment purposes, but more importantly, this will now serve as the main resource for the sound of the Ancient Greek genera (types of melodies or modes) that I will discuss in my different educational videos, and this video will serve as a permanent resource that can be consulted at any time for audio examples of the different Ancient Greek genera.
All the music heard here is simply improvisations in all of the main, attested modes of Ancient Greek music as given to us by Aristoxenus in the Hellenistic Era, using period instruments. The first improvisations are in the diatonic genus, then follows the enharmonic genus, followed finally by the chromatic genus, most tuned using Pythagorean ratios, although Equal Temperament had to be used at certain points for convenienceโs sake. Each improvisation is demarcated from the others with the name of the mode, its genus, and the instruments used. Other than serving as relaxing music, this video will hopefully introduce many to the general melodic, modal and tetrachordal soundscape of Ancient Greek music.
