🚉 Getting to Sorrento from Pompeii
We kicked off our day in sunny Pompeii and made a spontaneous decision to visit the famous cliffside town of Sorrento—often considered the official start of the Amalfi Coast. With barely any time to spare, we rushed to catch the Circumvesuviana train at Villa dei Misteri station. The scenic coastal journey took less than 30 minutes and cost only €2.40 per ticket. For entertainment, we even had live performances on the train, which brought great vibes to the start of our adventure.

☕ Second Breakfast: Sorrento’s Cafés & Pastries
Arriving in Sorrento just before the holidays, we were greeted by festive Christmas decorations and friendly street dogs. Our first mission: find a cozy café for breakfast! We landed at a pastry shop with dazzling displays and couldn’t resist sitting down for coffee and sweet treats. Two cappuccinos came decadently coated in Nutella, and for food we sampled canola Franzese (a cream-filled pastry with nuts) and Sorrento’s signature dessert, Delizia al Limone—a sugary, lemony delight that’s a must-try in the region. We also shared a hearty panini loaded with goat cheese, ham, and fresh tomatoes to balance out all the sweetness.

🌊 Exploring Sorrento’s Marina Grande
After breakfast, we wandered through the picturesque streets toward the waterfront, soaking in views of pastel buildings and boats bobbing in the harbor. The morning mist added a magical touch to the scenery. Along the way, we stumbled upon a historical monument dedicated to the many Sorrentini who emigrated to Mar del Plata, Argentina—a nod to the enduring ties between Italy and Argentina that was personally meaningful, given family connections.

🍕 Seaside Lunch: Pizza with a View
By lunchtime, we were seated at a seaside restaurant, Ristorante Bagni Sant'Anna, ready to embrace our ongoing quest for Italian pizza. Since we were by the sea, seafood pizzas were on the menu! One featured mussels in the shell, adding vibrant color and authentic local flavor, while the other was a classic Pizza Romana with salty anchovies and thick mozzarella cheese. Both pizzas were delicious, but the anchovy one stood out for its bold, salty flavor. Dessert was a shot of vibrant limoncello, the region’s famous lemon liqueur, perfect for rounding out a decadent meal. The bill was very reasonable, with two pizzas, sparkling water, and cover charge totaling €23.

⛪ Sorrento’s Cathedrals and Shopping Streets
After lunch, we tried to visit the Sorrento Cathedral but missed the opening hours (open 8:00-12:30 & 16:30-21:00), so we admired it from outside. We continued through Sorrento’s lively pedestrian streets lined with boutique shops, outdoor markets, and endless bottles of limoncello—the go-to souvenir! The festive atmosphere was in full swing with Christmas just weeks away.

Our last stop was the tranquil Cloisters of St. Francis, which hosted a small art exhibition and offered panoramic views of the Mediterranean coastline—a perfect way to soak up Sorrento’s beauty one last time.

🛍️ Winter Shopping & Local Fashion
As the temperature dropped, the afternoon turned into a spontaneous shopping spree—not out of love for fashion, but necessity! After several chilly days in the same clothes, we found a cozy turtleneck and a stylish green jacket to keep warm. It was a throwback to our travel days in Korea and Southeast Asia—reminding us of the importance of practical travel gear, especially in winter.

🔚 Reflections: Sorrento’s Winter Charm
Despite fewer activities compared to summer, Sorrento proved to be a charming, walkable city—perfect for a relaxing day trip packed with food, shopping, and stunning views. For those with more time or warmer weather, Sorrento is also the jumping-off point for ferries to Capri and further exploration of the Amalfi Coast. Even in winter, this little city captured our hearts (and filled our bellies)!
