The Klausen Pass, located at an elevation of 1,948 meters (6,391 feet) in the Swiss Alps, serves as a significant link between the canton of Uri in the west, specifically the town of Altdorf, and the canton of Glarus in the east, leading to Linthal. Unlike many other historic alpine passes, the Klausen Pass was not primarily a trading route in ancient times but rather a cattle track utilized for moving livestock to the high alpine pastures. A notable geographical feature is that the cantonal boundary between Uri and Glarus does not lie at the summit, but approximately 8 kilometers down the eastern slope, placing the entire pass summit within Uri.
The paved road traversing the Klausen Pass, which stretches for about 46 kilometers between Altdorf and Linthal, was constructed in phases, with the final section completed between 1893 and 1899. This engineering feat opened the remote valleys to tourism, and the first horse-drawn post coaches began operating in 1900, followed by the introduction of alpine bus services in 1922. The pass road is renowned for its winding sections, hairpin bends, and diverse landscapes, ranging from forested slopes to expansive alpine meadows, including the Urnerboden, Europe's largest single alp. Due to heavy snowfall, the pass is typically closed to traffic from October to May.
Beyond its scenic beauty and popularity among motorists, cyclists, and motorcyclists, the Klausen Pass holds a special place in motorsport history. From 1922 to 1934, it hosted the legendary Klausenrennen, a challenging 21.5-kilometer hill climb race that attracted top drivers and large crowds, establishing itself as one of Europe's toughest mountain challenges. While the original race ceased, memorial events for vintage cars and motorcycles have been held periodically since 1993, reviving the spirit of this historic competition. At the summit, the Bruder-Klaus-Kapelle, a historic chapel, stands as a landmark, and various hiking trails, including a section of the Alpine Pass Route, invite visitors to explore the surrounding high-alpine environment, offering stunning views of glaciers, peaks like the Clariden, and cascading waterfalls.
