4:12 How to lower stress levels and prevent fight-or-flight
In this video, I want to talk about the biggest barrier to recovery and health, which is stress.
In particular, we’re going to talk about the activation of the “fight or flight” mechanism. The sympathetic nervous system’s primary function is to stimulate your body’s fight-or-flight response.
When your body is in a fight or flight state, your adrenal glands are activated, which sharply increases your levels of cortisol and adrenaline.
Our bodies aren’t made to endure long periods of time in fight or flight mode—you can endure 90 seconds or less without a problem. However, today’s environments at work and in daily activities promote the fight or flight system to work endlessly, which just isn’t healthy.
The problem is, when you get stressed, you cannot heal or recover. When fight-or-flight mode is always activated, you…
• Are unable to get good sleep
• Cannot heal
• Release glucose
• Can’t recover
• Can experience poor digestion
• Have poor wound healing
• Retain sodium
• Excrete potassium
• May cause damage to your hippocampus
• Have added risk of disease and infection
• Experience chronic inflammation
• Experience an increased risk of heart disease
• Experience bone loss
• Experience a loss of collagen formation
You can help reduce your stress levels with these simple things:
• Exercise:
• Diet
• Fasting
• Acupressure
• Vitamin B1, potassium, and magnesium
• Breathing exercises
• Vacation/taking time off
• Not taking things so seriously
