The Ukrainian army's counterattack in recent days has caused the Russian army to fall apart in many directions along the front. In some directions, the Russians are even retreating en masse. Ukrainian forces are ramping up the pace and the scale of Kyiv’s counteroffensive, after they have managed to wipe out weeks of Russia’s gains and liberated multiple small settlements in southeastern Ukraine in the region of Zaporizhzhia. According to the US-based Institute for the Study of War think tank (ISW), the main Ukrainian advance has been recorded roughly 80 kilometres east of Zaporizhzhia city, where Russian forces had been making gains since the summer of 2025.
Ukrainian forces have also regained control of territory in north-eastern and eastern Ukraine, on the Kharkiv, Kostiantynivka, Pokrovsk and Novopavlivka fronts. Kyiv troops started slowing down Russian troops about a week ago and in many areas largely stopped their advance.
Estonian intelligence says that Russian army has faced a number of serious problems on the battlefield after the massive shutdown of Starlink terminals for enemy forces. Another factor complicating the Russian offensive was the recent restrictions on Telegram. Estonian Colonel Ants Kiviselg confirmed the impact of Ukrainian counteroffensives in retaking territories, emphasizing the notable setbacks faced by the Russian army in recent developments. According to him, the blocking of Starlink terminals for the Russian army became the actual reason for the reduction in the number of Russian UAV strikes on Ukrainian rear units.
Moreover, Estonian intelligence records a slowdown in the exchange of information between Russian military personnel at the horizontal level. “So the Russian command system, control of the defeat, and coordination between units were disrupted — and this contributed to Ukrainian counterattacks”, Kiviselg emphasized. Against this background, he added that it would be a mistake to declare a total "collapse" of the Russian army's command system. An Estonian colonel officially confirmed that the Armed Forces of Ukraine recently launched counteroffensive actions in the Zaporizhia region in the Huliapole area.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine's Defense Forces have liberated 300 square kilometers in the south of the country during counteroffensive assault operations. "I won't go into too many details," he said regarding the achievements of the Ukrainian army. "There are problems, there are challenges," he said, noting that the setbacks faced by the Russian side were "much more serious." He stressed that it cannot be said that Ukraine is losing the war against Russia: "You can't say that we're losing the war. Honestly, we're definitely not losing it, definitely. The question is whether we will win." He added that "it is a very costly question."
Earlier, American analysts reported that Ukrainian troops were able to regain control of hundreds of square kilometres in a matter of days. One of the key reasons for this success is said to be a technological ‘blackout’ in the Russian army, which affected the coordination of units.
According to a recent assessment by the Institute for the Study of War, the pace of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' advance has been the fastest since the counteroffensive in the summer of 2023.
Experts note that if the trend continues, it may indicate preparations for more large-scale offensive operations in the southern direction. For now, the Ukrainian command is sticking to a tactic of gradual pressure and local breakthroughs.
