Music psychology is a branch of two disciplines: psychology & musicology. Its goal is to describe and understand musical behavior (which encompasses processes that allow music to be perceived, created, or included into the everyday life). The psychology of music is based on empirical study; the knowledge of this field is developed thanks to interpretations of data gathered by constant observation of participants.
Music psychology is a kind of research that has practical references to many other areas of study, for example, perfomance, education, criticism, and therapy. It also investigates and explores human social behavior & capabilities: skills, intelligence, creativity, et cetera. Psychology of music contains areas of expertise that deal with applications of sounds in everyday life (apart from amateur or professional musical practices, for instance, programming: this kind of production of electronic music uses tools – like sequencers – that emulate sounds of instruments in hip-hop, jazz or rap rock).
One of the studies, which is worth mentioning, concerns background music. It shows that sounds can influence performance during cognitive work (which includes such tasks: comprehension, attention, and memory use). It is stated that background music can affect learning in a positive, as well as negative, manner.
