Z-war correspondents' fears that the shutdown of Starlink satellite internet would undermine Russian troops' positions on the front lines have begun to come true. Ukrainian forces advanced in the Zaporizhzhia region after Russian units lost communications from Elon Musk's company, a senior NATO official told The Moscow Times. An alliance representative, speaking on condition of anonymity, did not specify the extent to which Ukraine's recent successes could be directly linked to Russia's loss of access to Starlink. However, he noted, "Having lost this connection, Russia has found itself in a somewhat difficult position in terms of operational command and control of its forces. Any alternative Russia proposes will likely not be as effective." This is precisely what Z-bloggers warned about after Musk, in early February, shut down terminals not included on Ukraine's "whitelists." "It will now suddenly become clear that units without communications cannot operate effectively. This will be news to some in high places," wrote "Belarusian Silovik" immediately after the incident. The Russian army "simply has no alternative to Starlink... a lot, including combat command and control, was tied to it," lamented "Military Observer." "We're left without communication!" a Russian soldier complained in a video posted on the Telegram channel "War Correspondents of the Russian Spring." The channel called on volunteers to urgently raise money to purchase radios. Troop command and control has become difficult on almost all fronts; soldiers are writing to us asking for help with equipment—radio bridges and radio stations. Starlink terminals operated illegally in Russian units because they were smuggled in from other countries. They were able to be configured, in part, because they were technically located in Ukraine, albeit occupied. Even during the Biden administration, the US Department of Defense began discussing the deactivation of Starlink terminals in Russian forces with Musk's SpaceX, which provides Starlink communications services. In the summer of 2024, the Pentagon announced the shutdown of hundreds of illegal terminals. But this did not fundamentally solve the problem, and under Donald Trump this issue was not raised. Mykhailo Fedorov, formerly Ukraine's Minister of Digital Transformation, shortly after his appointment as Minister of Defense in January, asked SpaceX to disable Russian terminals. These included all devices not registered in Ukraine. The Russian army used them not only for communications but recently even began installing them on combat drones to evade Ukrainian defenses. Immediately after the shutdown, the Ukrainian Armed Forces recorded a drop in combat activity. The General Staff's February 5 report cited 56 assaults by the Russian side, compared to 80-110 previously. In recent days, both sides have claimed success in the Zaporizhia region. On Wednesday, the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported recapturing the village of Kosivtseve. Meanwhile, in recent weeks, the Russian army has almost completely captured the city of Huliaipole. It is the last major settlement on the route to the regional capital, Zaporizhzhia.
