PNF Stretching: Contract-Relax (CR) Technique | Hamstring Flexibility
In this video, Dr. Donald Ozello demonstrates the Contract-Relax (CR) technique of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching. This dynamic variation distinguishes itself from other PNF methods by using an Isotonic Contraction (movement against resistance) to facilitate muscle relaxation.
π Clinical Context: Contract-Relax vs. Hold-Relax While both techniques utilize Autogenic Inhibition, the execution differs significantly:
Hold-Relax (HR): Uses an Isometric contraction (no joint movement) followed by relaxation.
Contract-Relax (CR): Uses an Isotonic contraction (Concentric) where the doctor allows the leg to move through the range of motion against resistance.
Benefit: The dynamic nature of CR can often yield greater gains in functional range of motion for athletes.
Technique Breakdown:
Patient Position: Supine, leg passively raised to the point of mild tension.
Step 1 (Isotonic Contraction): Patient inhales and pushes the leg down (contracting hamstrings) while the doctor applies resistance but allows the leg to move back to the table (10 seconds).
Step 2 (Relax): Patient exhales and relaxes completely.
Step 3 (Stretch): The doctor passively moves the leg back up into a new, deeper range of hip flexion.
Duration: Hold the new stretch for 15-60 seconds. Repeat 3-5 times.

1. Assisted Stretching: Stretch Out Strap For patients performing PNF at home, a rigid strap is essential to provide the resistance needed for the contraction phase. π https://amzn.to/3ZoTln7
2. Myofascial Release: High-Density Foam Roller Rolling out the hamstrings before PNF stretching can improve tissue compliance and reduce resistance. π https://amzn.to/4qsFHeF
