Frieren was my favorite anime of 2024.
I was completely mesmerized by its quiet storytelling - the stillness, the melancholy, and the way it portrays the passage of time. After the final episode in season one, I knew I had to make something special to capture the essence of Frierenโs long journey through the ages.
As a long-time admirer of Evan Callโs music, I wanted to pay tribute to his incredible work once again - this time through a piano medley that unites six of the most iconic soundtracks from Frieren: Beyond Journeyโs End.
I arranged them as one continuous suite, without any breaks, to musically represent Frierenโs past, present, and future.
โ Great Mage Flamme (0:00)
The medley begins in the age of legends. The mystical aura of the Flamme theme sets the tone for Frierenโs origins as an immortal mage. I added a transition that connects the ancient, sacred mood of Flamme with the powerful Celtic rhythm of Zoltraak. This bridge was inspired by Rachmaninoffโs concertos - magic evolving into might.
โก Zoltraak (1:51)
This is probably the piece everyone recognizes - the battle theme with its iconic Celtic sound. Itโs also my favorite pianistic challenge: playing multiple melody lines with only two hands, wheere the voices intertwine like dueling spells. The entire section is actually a fusion of two soundtracks - Zoltraak and Evolution of Magic - since they share the same melody. The result is a hybrid of grace and destruction, representing the duality of Frierenโs power.
โข Waltz for Stark and Fern (4:32)
After the battle, warmth returns. Despite this theme appearing only once in the anime, the waltz scene between Stark and Fern left a deep impression on me - it captured a rare tender moment between everyoneโs favorite couple, Stark and Fern. In the second half, the sudden key change arrives completely unexpectedly, like a spark of emotion that makes your heart skip a beat. I added an original coda inspired by Chopinโs waltzes to preserve that fleeting feeling - a brief dance suspended in time.
โฃ Frieren the Slayer (7:10)
This is the most technically demanding section of the medley. I slightly shortened a few passages from the original soundtrack to tighten the pacing and sharpen the buildup of tension. The tremolos demand stamina and precision, but they also tell a story: the legend of Frieren the Slayer - the immortal who once walked with heroes. Here, the piano becomes almost orchestral, embodying her mythical strength.
โค One Last Adventure (9:40)
This piece is my emotional core of the medley. After the heroic storm, everything falls silent again. The scene of Frieren and Himmel watching the shooting stars together one last time inspired this entire section. This is basically a musical reflection of how Himmel continues to live on in her memories.
โฅ Main Theme (11:22)
To conclude, I returned to the Frieren Main Theme, arranged in a majestic tutti piano style to bring closure to the journey. However, near the end the music slowly fades into pianissimo - because Frierenโs story is not over yet. Her journey continues beyond the horizon, quietly, endlessly.
Overall, this medley is my tribute to Frieren - a story about time, loss, and the quiet beauty of remembrance. It's also one of my favorite anime series in 2024.
